Dogs in Philippine History
Dogs in Philippine History is one of my best "Facebook discoveries. I don't remember exactly when, but one of its posts randomly appeared in my feeds; perhaps Facebook's snooping technology figured out that I am a pet parent. The post ignited a spark of hope in me, so I "liked" the page in a heartbeat and scanned for any links where I could buy one.
Aside from my decorative balls, I also buy Filipiniana literature, or Philippine books that showcase the best of being a Filipino. Dogs in Philippine History explores the deep relationships between Filipinos and dogs throughout the centuries and how this relationship has shaped Philippine history. It is well-researched and has plenty of beautiful photos and anecdotes. For a dog parent like me, this is an absolute must-have.
I grew up having dogs in our household, and I loved them greatly; I mourned their passing. I wish I had a voice to advocate for better food and to allow them to stay inside the house on their own behalf. Sadly, it's a different time. I was just a child obliged to obey the elders…
Everything I couldn't do for my old dogs, I gave all to my Conchaboy, I buy him the best food I could afford, he gets regular doses of belly rubs, and I make sure he gets healthy treats. Very spoiled dog!
From where I came from, it’s quite rare to hear where pet owners pamper their pets, perhaps it’s a matter of limited resources, or the mentality “it’s just a dog” is still prevalent.
I haven’t been living in the Philippines for almost twenty years but it’s a breathe of fresh air finding this book and to see that it’s being regularly promoted, It gives me a sign that perception is starting to change towards dogs/ dog ownership in general, I have seen signs in social media that the term “fur baby” has been part of local vernacular, “askal” short for Asong kalye (stray dog) is slowly being replaced with the Term “Aspin” or “Asong Pinoy” a term for local mixed breed dog, - very minute changes, it still a progress - I hope that this book reinforces all these evolving views to our canine bff’s.
I haven't finished reading the book yet as I am waiting for warmer sunny days to arrive to enjoy reading it on my patio with my Conchaboy nearby.
Thank you for writing this book, Mr. Alfonso.
Google landed me on this page: Philippine Books, where I bought my copy.
